Preparing For Breast Augmentation
Once you’ve scheduled your surgery
- You will be provided with detailed pre-operative instructions by one of our registered nurses dedicated to you.
- You will also receive vitamins to take leading up to and after your surgery. In preparation for your breast augmentation procedure, you may be advised to make adjustments to your current medication regimen. It is important to note that patients over the age of 40 are encouraged to obtain a mammogram taken within the past year for their safety.
- Additionally, it is essential to arrange for a reliable friend or family member to transport you to and from your surgery and to remain with you for at least 24 hours following your procedure.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Your outpatient breast augmentation procedure generally takes less than one hour in the operating room and will be performed under general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist or board-certified nurse anesthetist at Vincera Surgery Center or Tuttleman Surgery Center. Dr. Bucky utilizes a gentle “no touch” technique that results in a rapid recovery that typically requires no use of narcotics and a return to normal activities in 48 hours.
Dr. Bucky offers three incision options, which all offer different advantages. Depending on the goals and needs of each patient, Dr. Bucky will help you determine which approach is best:
- A. Inframammary (under the breast) *Preferred
- B. Periareolar (around the edge of the areola)
- C. Transaxillary (through the armpit, performed endoscopically)
Dr. Bucky will help you decide the best location for your implants and explain incisions as well as a scar treatment for optimal healing. In surgery, he utilizes the Keller Funnel, an innovative device that allows for a smaller incision, gentle insertion, and a “No-Touch” technique for the remarkably quick and gentle placement of silicone implants during breast augmentation. Breast Augmentation Recovery
Our innovative Rapid Recovery breast augmentation protocol is designed to facilitate a swift and smooth recuperation, with most breast augmentation patients experiencing less discomfort and downtime than typically associated with traditional breast implant surgery. Patients often take little to no pain medication after their surgery other than ibuprofen and can expect to resume normal activities typically within 48 hours. Breast augmentation is considered safe when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in all types of breast surgery. However, like all surgical procedures, breast augmentation does have some risk of complications which include anesthesia risks, changes in sensation, seroma, infection, capsular contracture, hematoma, implant rupture, and poor scarring.2
Breast implants do not cause cancer, however, the FDA has identified a possible increased risk between breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma, or ALCL in women with textured breast implants.3
When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, both subglandular (implants placed above the chest muscles) and submuscular breast augmentation procedures (implants placed below the pectoral muscle) should not interfere with the ability to breastfeed.5 However, the ability to breastfeed is associated with many factors not associated with breast implant surgery.
